All students who wish to enrol in Year 9 at Nossal High School must apply to sit the entrance examination.

Application enquiries

Advice can only be provided to the person identified as the registered parent on the online application form.

Parents will receive a unique Student ID Number for the Selective Entry High School examination.  Parents will need to quote this number or provide other identifying information in order to discuss individual student details on the phone with the Selective Entry Unit. Parents who cannot provide adequate identifying information on request will need to submit their enquiry via email to

Entry Exam

Students who are in their second year of high schooling or its equivalent (usually Year 8) are eligible to apply for entry into Nossal High School. Academic merit is determined by each student’s performance on a series of tests that form the entry examination. The examination process consists of five tests that are outlined here.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for and attend a Selective Entry High School, students must be in their second year of secondary schooling or its equivalent (usually Year 8), have not previously sat the examination for Year 9 entry, and be:

  • an Australian citizen, or
  • a New Zealand citizen residing in Australia, or
  • holders of a visa or ImmiCard, which would exempt them from paying International Student Fees to attend a Victorian government school (for further information, refer to International Student Visa Fee Table at: and the ImmiCard section of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s website at:, or
  • able meet the above criteria by the time the offers process commences.

Students attending government and non-government schools, as well as home-schooled students, are eligible to apply.

The above eligibility criteria apply to students living in Victoria, as well as those living and studying interstate or overseas. More information for students living interstate/overseas can be found in section 5.

Fee-paying international students enrolled in Victorian schools are not eligible to apply.

Late applications will be accepted up until Friday 20 May 2022 subject to the payment of a late fee of $25 in addition to the application fee. Applications that are submitted after this date cannot be accepted.

Examination Detail

The Selective Entry School Examination takes place at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale on Saturday 23 July 2022. An information package will be sent via email to all applicants in the week before the entrance examination. Student identification numbers, transport and venue information along with helpful tips for taking the entrance examination will be included.

Applicants will receive advice about exam centres early in July and applicants will be informed of the outcomes in September. The website contains detailed information about the selection process and a sample exam, as well as links to the individual selective schools websites.

Selection Process

Only students who undertook the examination are eligible for selection to the selective entry high schools. At selective entry high schools 85 per cent of students are accepted based on examination results only.

Equity Consideration

It is government policy to support the participation of highly able students from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing selective entry schooling. Students whose parents have a Commonwealth Health Care Card or students who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders are eligible to apply for Equity Consideration. Up to 10% of the Year 9 enrolments at Nossal High School can be filled via this category.

Principal’s Discretion

The Principal of Nossal High School, Mr. Roger Page has the authority to accept up to 5% of the Year 9 enrolment through a discretionary category. Applicants who meet the criteria for consideration for this category will be notified by Nossal High School and be invited to submit an application. Principal’s Discretion offers are only made to students who sit the exam.  Not all eligible students will be offered the chance to apply.
